Latest findings on the use of functional bacteria in the paper industry

The use of Functional Bacteria as a biological cleaner is a very interesting alternative to conventional chemical treatments, which are widely used in the paper industry.
There is a large range of applications: odour control, removal/reduction of organic deposits, acidification prevention, and even indirect support for prevention of Legionella in cooling water systems.
The benefits are undeniable: process optimization without chemicals, sustainability, risk reduction for operators and environment.

As a pioneer in this field, Servophil has been successfully using its S-BACPRO products, based on Functional Bacteria, for already 5 years in an ever-growing number of applications.
While more and more trials are being conducted, there is still much to be discovered about the mechanisms of action of this innovative treatment.

In this presentation we would like to discuss the latest findings we have made with our Functional Bacteria in the case of two specific applications:

  • efficient prevention of pH decrease in the DIP plant of Model Eilenburg paper mill
  • successful odour control in a board mill

In both cases, we conducted in-depth examinations of the microbiomes using DNA sequencing analysis (so-called "16S rRNA Next Generation Sequencing", that was recommended to us by the renowned Wageningen University as part of a collaboration project). It was found that the use of Functional Bacteria creates a new balance in the microbiome, in which aerobic species tend to become more numerous and acidification tends to be reduced.
